2010 Circle of Courage Awards: Generosity
Hannah Penny Chillis, Therapeutic Interventionist at CIRCLE Academy

“I will help you.” “That’s no problem.” “Let me know when you are ready” These are just a few examples of the words that Circle Academy students and staff can count on hearing from Ms. Chillis.

So often, a student’s behavior has changed dramatically as they have observed the generous spirit demonstrated by Ms. Chillis. Hannah has that affect on her students as they tune in to her kindness and start to model her actions. All the students and staff know that if Ms Chillis has it – whether it is time, knowledge, a recipe, a strategy, a community resource – she will share it - with her co-workers, the students, their families - without hesitation.

For over ten years, whenever there is a Circle Academy all staff meeting, a CA~ST(Circle Academy Student Team) meeting, area meetings, planning meetings, you will often hear Ms. Chillis say, “Is that good for the kids?” or “That’s not going to work for the kids.” or “What about the students, I mean……,” or “Okay-okay, now that’s really going to work for the kids.”

Hannah began her work at Circle Academy as a classroom teacher’s assistant. In that capacity Ms. Chillis built productive relationships as an advocate for all of her students and their families. She would always meet the student where they were and work to move them forward in the program to meet their individualized goals.

Ms. Chillis currently works as a Therapeutic Interventionist working with 25 or more students and their families each year. She has not waivered in her personal commitment to advocate for Circle students - at school, in their homes, and in the community. Ms. Chillis works with parents, guardians, employers, judges, school district personnel, pastors, probation officers, agency representatives, utility companies, food pantries, community service programs, thrift shops and any other individual or group who can help her students achieve their goals.

When past students return to visit, they often reflect on the guidance, advice, and positive support that Ms. Chillis gave them. Her calm, matter-of-fact, generous spirit provides encouragement and motivates her students to have the confidence they need to be successful. And, they know she is always there for them.

Hannah’s efforts are genuine. She is an essential component of the Circle Academy program. Hannah’s passion and commitment to kids helps keep everyone grounded in the mission and vision of the Circle program.
