Cunningham Breaks Ground on our Spiritual Life Center

On October 26, Cunningham broke ground on the second building project of our Master Campus Plan, the Spiritual Life Center. The informal blessing and groundbreaking ceremony took place in front of the Illinois Building on our main campus, which must be torn down due to structural problems. The site will find new life, however, as a spiritual center for current Cunningham staff and youth and an alumni center for past and future generations.

"Turning the dirt" during the informal blessing and groundbreaking ceremony were (above, from left) IGRC United Methodist Women's President Carolyn Yockey, Iroquois River District Superintendent's Office Representative Pat Setzler, former Illinois Cottage resident Lynn Hart, Cunningham Chaplain Rev. Gay King Crede, Gerber School Teacher Gail Block, Cunningham President and CEO Sam Banks, and 2006 Cunningham Board President Carrie Kmoch.

The Spiritual Life Center will provide a sanctuary and gathering place for all those connected to the ministry of Cunningham Children's Home. It will include a chapel for worship, the Erin Block prayer and meditation room, the chaplain's office, an alumni room, and other office and meeting room spaces. Situated at the high point of the Cunningham Campus, the Center will be located at the current site of the Illinois building, which sadly must be demolished due to structural problems.

A more formal public dedication ceremony will be planned to celebrate the opening of the Center, sometime in 2006!
