Spiritual Life Center

Since 1895, Cunningham has been a sanctuary for children in need. Spiritual healing, exploration and growth have always been essential to life at Cunningham Children's Home.

For 110 years Cunningham Children's Home has been a refuge and sanctuary for children in need. Spiritual healing, exploration and growth have always been essential to life at Cunningham Children's Home.

During its first half-century, all the children of Cunningham were able to regularly attend the First United Methodist Church in Urbana. Today, that is no longer possible. The children are not emotionally prepared or behaviorally ready to worship within the community. Their healing must continue within the safe environment of Cunningham before they can make this step.

The Chaplaincy Program at Cunningham helps residents explore and develop their individual beliefs and apply these to life situations. The program facilitates personal spiritual development in the areas of self-esteem, value clarification, discovering a sense of purpose and movement towards holistic emotional and spiritual healing.

The Spiritual Life Center is a sacred place for worship, spiritual reflection and healing. At its heart is the United Methodist Women’s Chapel of Hope. The building also includes a prayer and meditation room, alumni heritage room, public reception space to gather for campus tours, smaller meeting room, serving kitchen for gatherings, and offices for the Church and Community Relations and Development staff.

The Spiritual Life Center has already become a central gathering place for all those connected to Cunningham’s mission and ministry. Inside, children, staff, Cunningham alumni, members of the Boards of Directors and friends of Cunningham can participate in a faith community within the community of Cunningham Children's Home.
