As Christmas approached, Chapel services at Cunningham Children's Home have centered around the Biblical story of the birth of Jesus. We compared the jolly, merry sentiments of Christmas songs with the realities of the first Christmas.
We talked about how Mary and Joseph faced an unplanned pregnancy, taxes, a long journey, no place to stay, their baby being born in an animal shelter, and fleeing the country to save their lives. Not such a perfect Christmas. And yet, God came in the midst of such circumstances. God chose to come into our less than perfect, oftentimes troubling situations.
The message of Christmas is not that all is merry, but that we are not alone. God understands. God cares. God is with us.
The kids got it. And when asked who we should remember during the Christmas season they responded:
the homeless
prostitutes and their children
people who live in Iraq
those who have no family
hurricane victims
those with AIDS
those in shelters
kids abused by parents
the hungry
those living on the streets
the sick and those with diseases
soldiers and their families
kids staying at Cunningham for Christmas
those who have no money to buy things for Christmas
all who feel alone
These and many more, God is with. Let us remember God is with us too, especially when we face rough times in the new year. The light shines in the darkness.
