About Quilt Appraisals
For a $40 fee per quilted item, Sue will examine each quilt, looking at the design, describing the pattern, determining the date and fabrics, examining techniques, quilting, workmanship and condition to determine the value of the quilt.
It takes about 30 minutes to complete a written appraisal. Besides a written appraisal, Sue will discuss recommendations on care, restoration and storage of your quilted item.
A portion of proceeds from each appraisal will be donated to Cunningham Children's Home.
Should My Quilt Be Appraised?
There are many reasons why you should have your quilt appraised, but most commonly appraisals are written for:
- replacement value for insurance purposes
- resale or fair market value to establish a value in order to sell a piece
- provide adequate coverage during shipping or while in transit
- to establish value for equitable distribution of property
- tax consideration when a donation is being made.
Without a written appraisal, most insurance companies will view a lost, stolen or damaged quilt as a “blanket" and will reimburse you $50 for the cost of a blanket. The value given for insurance purposes is “replacement” value, based upon how much it would cost to purchase the quilt “like and kind”. Newly made quilts are given a “replacement” value, based on how much it would cost to remake the quilt “like and kind”.
If you think of your quilts as more than blankets, you may want to make sure that your insurance company sees it that way, too.
About Sue Harmon
Sue grew up sleeping under the quilts made by her grandmothers, so it isn’t any wonder that she became interested in quilting. Sue began making quilts in the early 1970’s, took classes, taught various quilting techniques, owned a quilt shop in northern Illinois, helped found three quilt guilds, and has given numerous workshops, lectures and appraisals through out the Midwest.
Being intrigued with the history of her own quilts and the quilts of friends and customers, Sue began studying the history of quilting and the dating of fabrics. After taking several appraisal classes provided by the American Quilter’s Society, she became certified in 1997 by the American Quilters’ Society as a Certified Quilted Textile Appraiser.
Besides her interest in quilting, Sue is a director of a Parents Day Out program at her local church. She lives in La Grange, IL with her husband. They have two married children and three grandchildren. During the summer months, they enjoy spending time at a lake in Northern Minnesota.
