Christmas Firsts

Christmas Firsts

On a snowy, bitterly cold day last December, 12 year-old James and his counselor Joy trekked up a snowy hill pulling a couple of sleds. James had come to Cunningham Children’s Home the month before, and would soon experience his first Christmas without his family.

Despite the weather, James desperately wanted to play outside. Joy was happy to oblige  and suggested they build a snowman.

As they rolled the snowballs, James became frustrated that his weren’t coming together as fast or as good as Joy’s. He wanted to quit. His young life had been full of struggles, and he gave up on things easily.
Joy stepped over to console him and to offer encouragement. Despite his frustration, she was hopeful. Joy knew that James was capable of finishing the job.

As their snowman came to life, James ran in search of sticks for arms. Grinning from ear to ear, he returned shouting with pride, “I found the PERFECT sticks.”

James handed Joy the snowman’s arms and softly asked, “Wanna know something?”
As Joy nodded he said, “This is my very first snowman.”
